We aim to revolutionize the concrete industry by integrating renewable biochar (Kinochar™) to significantly reduce carbon emissions. We trust in the familiar reliability of basic concrete, enhanced by our patent-pending Kinochar™ technology, which sequesters carbon while fortifying strength, ensuring compliance with carbon limits without sacrificing performance.
Our solution is uniquely sustainable— it’s grown, not mined!
“Kainos.” it’s a vibrant Greek word meaning “new” or ”fresh.” Like our vision, it’s all about renewal, about turning the page to something not only new in time but revolutionary in nature, form or quality.
“Kainos” is for those looking to innovate to bring fresh perspectives and transformative ideas to light- exactly what we aim to do here at Kainos Materials.
Hi, I’m Lori Tunstall. I’m the founder of Kainos Materials, a professor at Colorado School of Mines, and a Princeton Ph.D. I started KM to help commercialize technological solutions we are developing in my lab. We are focused on using materials science to solve problems for the concrete industry, improving concrete’s durability and sustainability with simple strategies that work.
In every facet of my life, I’m passionate about problem solving. I’m a chronic achiever, obsessive about attaining excellence efficiently; and as a blend of optimism and grit, no hurdle is too high. I’ve been distinguished with several honors in different stages of my career—Princeton University’s Emerging Alumni Scholars Award as a graduate student, the Defense Programs Award of Excellence as a research scientist, and the National Science Foundation CAREER Award as a professor—all of which speak to my commitment to do things well, no matter what it is. For me, problem solving isn’t work, it’s play; so I’m genuinely excited to have some fun and continue innovating with Kainos Materials.
